Sanibel Captiva Fort Myers Charter Guide Fishing Report

Flats Fishing around the islands of Sanibel and Pine Island Sound was pretty good this week. The weather was great as long as you got out early or fished the late afternoon. Tides were flowing nicely and the Snook were spawning in the passes so hopefully the stock will continue to improve.

Keep an eye out for diving birds. Off the beaches it would mean ladyfish, bonita, spanish mackerel or tarpon. We did have multiple hook ups this pass week while tarpon fishing so they’re here and hungry. We also had some nice snook catches along the beaches of the islands.

Sanibel RedfishWhen in the back country, fishing the birds diving on bait, produces ladyfish, jacks, trout and tarpon. Even though we didn’t hook any tarpon in the back country this week we did see plenty.

Deep jigging the passes got some nice bites of mangrove snapper and small grouper which are fun to catch and we did get broken off with some nicer one.

Fly Fishing SanibelAll in all this week had some nice days of weather and also strong bites.

Get out on the water, take a kid fishing and always remember that “it’s great being us”!

Fishing charter in Sanibel and Fort Myers Florida

Sanibel Snook
Sanibel Snook

Snook fishing around the Fort Myers and the islands of Sanibel and Captiva is picking up. Yesterday the water temps were in the uppers 70’s. That’s what they like. Unfortunately it was blowing 20 MPH +, so everyone that was brave enough were looking for places to hide. It was apparent that the Snook were also looking for places to hide.

Luckily, I had friend/author Ben Shelfer with me. He’s easy going and whatever works for him. We struggled in the beginning, bait was scarce, protective cover was even scarcer. Thanks to my trusty Egret, best flats boat in the world, we were able to move where and when we wanted.

Bens love to catch snook, especially nice ones. The bite was on for a while, until a 6-7 foot bull shark decided to join in the fun.

Great day Ben!

Snook Fishing Trip – Fort Myers – Wold Family Charter

Recently I did a fishing charter for snook in the Fort Myers area with the Wold family. Ryan Wold is a great guy from MN . Ryan is the Branch Manager and a Financial Advisor in the Edina, Mn branch of Raymond James and Associates. Ryan has been fishing with me before and owns a condo in Fort Myers, FL. Ryan mentioned on our last trip that he would like to bring his two sons down to have a father/son adventure.

The day was set and I met Ryan, Graham age 13, and Keegan age 11 at the dock with bait tanks full. After seeing what the boys wanted for the day we were off to fish the Islands of Sanibel and Captiva. Neither son was big fishermen but they are competitive Skeet shooters.

Dad strikes first with a nice Trout and avoids having to pay one of his son’s for the first fish but then the boys start smok’n their dad. One after another the Snook kept coming to the boat with one of the boys hook in his mouth. Graham brings in the nicest Snook (28 inches) after a long and tough battle. The bite slowed and we were off to another adventure.

Later we were at a secret Grouper hole and the action started with Trout, Ladyfish and multiple Grouper. Keegan had his eyes on a large baitfish in the well and asked what we could catch with it. Shark, I replied, and he lit up. After minutes in the water, the bait did its job, but the hook did not. Bait gone, shark gone. Moments later, Dad had a hard hit and fish on. Keegan’s shark.
